Week 2 College Football Betting Preview – Baylor Bears vs Lamar Cardinals
By Ian Palmer
The Lamar Cardinals take on the fourth-ranked Baylor Bears in NCAA Football this Saturday, September 12 at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas. Fans should be treated to a high-scoring affair in this week two matchup. Lamar kicked their season off in fine fashion last week with a 66-3 demolition of Bacone College. They should be a confident bunch heading into this game even though they’ll be facing a much tougher outfit in Baylor.
Quarterback Joe Minden led the Cardinals against Bacone College in their season opener as he threw for 170 yards and three touchdowns by going 16 for 20. He was then replaced by backup quarterback Carson Earp for the rest of the game and Earp responded by adding another two touchdowns and 91 yards by going five for six. The scoring was spread out pretty evenly as wide receivers Gratian Gladney, Michael Handy, DeAndre Jennings, Martell Hawthorn and Reggie Begelton caught a touchdown pass each. They were also responsible for 213 of the squad’s 261 receiving yards.
Baylor has a good pass defense and they’ll need it to keep the Cardinals’ receivers in check. Baylor beat SMU 56-21 in their opening game and limited them to just 166 yards in the air and also added a pair of interceptions. Lamar can also offer up a good running game as running backs Keegan Mitchell, Emmitt Raleigh, Kade Harrington and Emmanuel Atoyebi all rushed for touchdowns last week. Running may be a better option since Baylor struggled against SMU on the ground as they allowed 203 yards against and a touchdown. The Cardinals’ defense will also have their hands full though since Baylor is equally as strong on the ground and in the air. In addition, Lamar has been beaten on their past five outings against FBS colleges.
Even though the Bears won 56-21 last week, starting quarterback Seth Russell struggled slightly by going 15 for 30. However, he still managed to throw five touchdown passes. He’ll be facing a passing defense that has had a hard time against FBS schools. Russell will be teaming up with wide receivers KD Cannon and Corey Coleman in the air. Both of these players had over 100 receiving yards against SMU and each chipped in with a touchdown. In addition, veteran wide receiver Jay Lee caught three touchdown passes and added 70 yards.
However, the Bears may be even better on the ground. Shock Linwood rushed for 75 yards last week and Terence Williams added 73 more with each of them having eight carries. Russell even rushed for a touchdown. Baylor will be relying on Jamal Palmer, Patrick Levels and Grant Campbell to lead the defense. All three of them recorded a sack in the win over SMU and chipped in with some timely tackles. In addition, the secondary had a couple of interceptions last week courtesy of Taion Sells and Tion Wright. Baylor has been pretty good at home lately by winning eight of their past 10 and posting a 6-4 record against the spread. They should make it nine home wins out of 11 after this game.
