The playoffs are on the line for the Washington Redskins when they host the postseason-bound New York Giants in an NFC East clash at FedEx Field on New Year’s Day.
Washington has to beat the Giants and hope that Detroit and Green Bay don’t play to a tie to keep their season going. An unlikely tie between the Packers and Lions would eliminate Washington as would a Redskins loss. If the Redskins win though and Green Bay or Detroit loses then they’re in.
Meanwhile, the Giants are in the playoffs as a wildcard team. Washington kept their hopes alive last week with a 41-21 win in Chicago while the Giants dropped a 24-19 decision in Philadelphia. The Redskins are 8-6-1 on the season and in third place in the division while the Giants are in second place at 10-5. These two teams met on September 25th with Washington winning 29-27 in New York.

New York Giants – A Closer Look:
The Giants clinched a playoff spot even though they lost to the Eagles last Thursday as New Orleans beat Tampa Bay to give them a helping hand. The Giants have locked up the NFC’s fifth seed no matter what happens in Washington on Sunday. Therefore, who knows if any of their regulars will sit this one out. Quarterback Eli Manning tossed a 63 passes against the Eagles, which was a career high, but managed to complete just 38 of them. He did throw a touchdown pass and for 356 yards, but he was picked off three times and has now been intercepted six times over his past four games.
His top target Odell Beckham Jr. had a good outing though with 140 yards on 11 receptions. He now needs just four more catches to reach 1,000 in his career. New York’s defense has been doing okay and even though cornerback Janoris Jenkins is injured. The Giants held the Eagles to less than 300 yards last week as well as 15 first downs, but still couldn’t get the job done. The Giants will be facing a desperate Washington team on Sunday and since they’re already in the playoffs it might be a tough task to get motivated for the game. In addition, the Giants have won just two of their past six road outings and are 2-3-1 ATS in that stretch.
Washington Redskins – A Closer Look:
Washington’s win over Chicago last week was a huge one since it kept their playoff chances alive. This is a must-win game against the Giants though and they’ll need a bit of outside help, meaning Green Bay and Detroit can’t tie. The Redskins already got some help with Dallas downing Detroit on Monday night. Fifth-year quarterback Kirk Cousins has enjoyed a fine season, in fact his best in the league by a long shot, and threw for a touchdown and 270 yards against Chicago. He’s racked up 4,630 yards in the air this year and also chipped in with four touchdowns on the ground. He’s now the second NFL quarterback ever to run in four touchdowns and throw for over 4,000 yards in a season.
The Redskins’ were missing tight-end Jordan Reed due to a shoulder injury last week, but Cousins managed to connect with wide receivers Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson as the pair of them combined for 208 yards on nine receptions. The Redskins’ defense was also in good form as it intercepted Bears’ quarterback Matt Barkley on five occasions. Washington has forced 22 turnovers this season to rank in the top half of the league in that department and Eli Manning will need to be on his toes. Washington has won three of their past five games at home over the Giants and need to make it four or their season’s over.
