The Cornhuskers were off last week with a bye and it was good timing since running back Ameer Abdullah suffered a sprained MCL the week before in a 35-14 victory against Purdue. However, junior Imani Cross filled in for the injured Abdullah and rushed for a couple of touchdowns. He averaged just 3.3 each carry though while the Cornhuskers rushed for four touchdowns and 179 yards. Head coach Bo Pelini believes that Abdullah will be back in top form this weekend and that will give his team a huge boost in confidence since he’s averaging a total of 188 yards per game this season, which is the best in the nation.
Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. rushed for 70 yards against Purdue and scored a touchdown and also passed for another TD. However, he wasn’t that great in the air as he gained just 118 yards and completed his season-worst 38 per cent of his passes. He’s up against a tough Badgers defense which concedes 118 yards against in the air per contest, which ranks third in the country. Nebraska pass defense has recorded 11 interceptions this year which could help them out since the Badgers were picked off four times in their loss to Northwestern earlier in the season.
The Badgers only loss of the year was against Northwestern, but they’ve improved and are 3-0 in their past three Big Ten contests. They’ve also outscored the opposition 123-24 in those games. They beat Purdue 34-16 last weekend with running back Melvin Gordon leading the way. Gordon scored his 19th TD of the campaign in the game and rushed over 200 yards for the third time. He averages 166 yards on the ground per game to lead the nation in that category and the Badgers average 325 rushing yards for a top-five ranking.
Wisconsin also got a good game out of quarterback Joel Stave as he passed for a season-best 219 yards and a 65.5 per cent pass completion. He also had a pair of touchdown passes. The Badgers are one of the top-five defensive teams in the country as they allow just 94 rushing yards against per game and 14 points on average. In they can keep Abdullah in check they’ll have a good chance at earning a big home victory, especially if Gordon can come up with another big game.
